About National Facilities

The goal of ACTRIS is to provide highly reliable information on the four-dimensional distribution of aerosols, clouds and reactive trace gases and on the processes that control their life cycles.

The functionality of ACTRIS is based on numerous National Facilities, whose operations are guided and supported by the Central Facilities. National Facilities within ACTRIS consist of Observational and Exploratory Platforms. Exploratory and selected Observational Platforms provide physical access to state-of-the-art, well-characterised and versatile facilities.

ACTRIS National Facilities support long-term observation and operations related to atmospheric aerosol, clouds and reactive trace gases with state-of-the-art in situ and remote sensing techniques, following measurement methodologies and procedures defined by ACTRIS Topical Centres. National Facilities are developed, managed, and operated by the national Research-Performing Organizations . The major task of the National Facilities is the acquisition and delivery of quality-controlled standardized open data.

Observational Platforms

ACTRIS Observational Platforms are fixed ground-based stations that deliver long-term high-quality data on a regular schedule and with common operation standards by applying state-of-the-art remote sensing and in situ measurement techniques.

Exploratory Platforms

ACTRIS Exploratory Platforms include atmospheric simulation chambers, mobile platforms and laboratories that perform dedicated experiments and provide data on atmospheric constituents and processes by following common ACTRIS standards
