Finland has renewed its national research infrastructure roadmap for 2025-2028 with altogether 21 research infrastructures (RI). Of these roadmap RIs, INAR RI (Integrated Atmospheric and Earth System Research Infrastructure) was selected as one of six “Lighthouse” research infrastructures. Lighthouse status was granted to RIs that have been the most successful infrastructures in the roadmap call, and lead the way in all key infrastructure areas, such as service provision, impact, functionality and shared use. The lighthouses are showcases of and spearheads for the service offer and impact of roadmap RIs.

INAR RI is coordinating the national activities of and co-locating four European environmental ESFRIs: ACTRIS, ICOS, eLTER and AnaEE. INAR RI consists of 30 stations, several exploratory platforms and a data infrastructure. The cornerstone of INAR RI is the network of advanced field stations such as Pallas-Sodankylä and the SMEAR (Station for Measuring Earth Surface – Atmosphere Relations) stations, which provide services and co-location of measurements for the environmental ESFRIs and set an example at the global level for co-located measurement stations. INAR RI integrates multidisciplinary comprehensive environmental measurements, and its services include open access to long-term observation data, access to research facilities, and instrument development. The research facilitated by INAR RI will have a positive effect on climate resilience, protection from environmental hazards, and human health. INAR RI is developing its top-level measurement stations, producing services easily applicable in society and further integrating the expertise of its research community, providing a strong and unique competence cluster for new knowledge and innovations.

Members of INAR RI are University of Helsinki, University of Eastern Finland, University of Turku, CSC – IT Centre for Science, Finnish Meteorological Institute, Finnish Environment Institute, Natural Resources Institute Finland, University of Oulu, Tampere University, and University of Jyväskylä.
