ATMO-SERV PROJECT started on 1 September 2026

ATMO-SERV Project

The ATMOspheric research infrastructure SERVices for curiosity-driven research of atmospheric chemistry and dynamics (ATMO-SERV) project has officially started, bringing together Europe’s and world leading atmospheric research infrastructures in a unique initiative that integrates observations from the Earth’s surface to the upper atmosphere, alongside human exposure research. By providing coordinated access to more than 90 research facilities and 12 digital services, ATMO-SERV will support frontier research on climate change, air quality, atmospheric dynamics and health impacts, while strengthening Europe’s role in global atmospheric observation networks and satellite validation activities.

The project’s Kick-Off Meeting will take place on 19-20 October 2026 in Katowice, Poland, bringing together key stakeholders to define a shared vision, review project objectives and launch the first activities of the four-year initiative. The meeting will include discussions on access services, work package priorities and future collaboration opportunities across the consortium and beyond.

ATMO-SERV unites the major European atmospheric research infrastructures ACTRIS, ICOS, IAGOS, EISCAT_3D and SIOS, together with EIRENE, ARISE, ASCENT and international partners. For the first time, this consortium connects the full spectrum of atmospheric observations, advanced experimental facilities, digital services and exposure research to address key scientific challenges related to emissions, aerosol-cloud interactions, atmospheric dynamics and the relations between air pollution and human health.

The project is already opening exciting new opportunities for international collaboration. Following a series of exchanges initiated over the summer and continued at key scientific events, synergies are now being developed  with the MAIA (Multi-Angle Imager for Aerosols) and LUCE (formerly Cloud and Aerosol Lidar for Global Scale Observations of the Ocean-Land-Atmosphere System/ CALIGOLA), missions, two joint efforts involving NASA and the Italian Space Agency (ASI). These connections will help strengthen the role of ATMO-SERV in supporting satellite calibration and validation activities, expanding global observation networks and fostering new scientific partnerships beyond Europe.

Through open, interoperable and FAIR research services, ATMO-SERV aims to advance atmospheric science, empower a new generation of researchers and deliver knowledge that supports science-based policies addressing climate, air quality and health challenges worldwide.
